  1. I chose the first video, I find it very interesting because it informs us about the fact that people (for example of the government) can spy on us with a lot of things such as the computer and telephones.

After all that, this consists of finding bad people even if we have to spy on innocent people.

The negative point is that we take a big part of the private lives of people.

  2. This video made me realize that the internet can be very dangerous. Indeed the government uses it to spy on people and sneak into their privacy in order to find guilty people . They can actually track your phone calls which is very scary. It made me also think about all the information that we put on social media like Facebook or Instagram that can be reused .

My own feeling on the subject is that we ‘re now living in a surveillance society which is totally scandalous because it doesn’t respect human rights !!

They’re all about Big brother and social networks and about the fact that we’re under surveillance.

How does the internet affect your life?
Internet has affected my life in different ways. Whenever I want to listen to music I check youtube, when I want to know what’s up in the world I check twitter, when I want to talk with friends I usually use facebook and sometimes skype.

How often do you use the internet?
One or two times a day. I usually log on just to check my twitter or facebook.

Do you have a Facebook account?
I do have one and know that people who are working for facebook are selling my information for advertising purposes.

How is all of the information you post on the internet being used by others?

Big brother is trying to find bad guys over the internet (criminals) so he checks my information to see if there is anything supsicious. Then there are companies like Facebook which use my information in a different way, they use my data to target ads.

Is your personal information being sold or spied on?
Sure as I said above, I think that I’m the product and that makes sense because if it’s free it’s because you (Me and a whole bunch of people ) are the product.

What do you know about the Book 1984?

I had never heard of this book but after reading a part of George Orwell’s biography I can tell that it’s a masterpiece it’s designed as one of the sharpest satirical fiction of the 20th century.
I think I may read it. It looks good.

  4. Personally, I totally agree with this man. I think that he is absolutely right, we all need privacy. Besides, it’s very scary and stifling to live in a society where you are totally “exposed” to everyone. The fact that being tracked down can be on the one hand reassuring and on the other hand very intimidating.

  5. I watched the video on an Orwellian Society and I totally agree with all the ideas this man, Brad Templeton, brought up.
He talks about how society evolved far beyond what George Orwell had imagined in “1984”, with a character called “Big Brother”, watching every single person at every moment of their lives.

I think Mr Templeton is right about the “totalitarian” and enhanced surveillance the governments and international organisations and companies are applying on everyone and I think it can go further than the average citizen thinks. I mean, we can be watched through social network accounts, phones and computers webcams turned on without anyone knowing, even what we type in web search engines are analyzed in order to target the most attractive advertisements for us !

I can’t help thinking that the technological progress, which was supposed to give more freedom to the whole society, is literally making it remove itself, so I couldn’t agree more with Mr Templeton.

I think he’s actually very clear sighted and this it what may bring him closer to the status he puts Orwell at; someone that clearly sees the evolution of society and has the ability to guess where it could lead.

  6. Brad Templeton said that we were all a part of a surveillance apparatus . The problem is the belief that privacy and security are mutually exclusive. Templeton is a Board Member and Former Chair of Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Track Chair for Computing at Singularity University. For him internet was built to be connected with family and friends not to spy on people. The government uses it to spy on us and we are not free to do whatever we want, there is always someone who can see what we are doing. It’s crazy 😟

  7. In my view, yes we are observed, yes it’s strange and yes it’s scary but I think if you are “clean” it’s not really a problem. The government or big companies like Google spy on us but in general our information isn’t associated with your name but just a number. Moreover, society takes information to improve them in accordance with the customer’s reaction. You can avoid being spied on with the simple gesture of deactivating your webcam on your computer, changing the search engine if you don’t like Google politics (confidential search engine: Startpage, Ixquick or DuckDuckGo), deactivating your Wi-fi sensor on your smartphone. It’s not difficult.

  8. In my opinion , I agree with Brad Templeton. On the one hand , the internet can be really dangerous but on the other hand, the internet can be really useful because it helps us prevent” bad people” from committing crimes. It’s scary because when the government does that , they do not respect the privacy of everyone.

  9. I watched the video which is named “Brad Templeton: Today’s Surveillance Society is Beyond Orwellian”.
“Orwellian” is an adjective describing the situation, idea, or societal condition that George Orwell identified as being destructive to the welfare of a free and open society. To describe something as “Orwellian” is to say that it brings to mind the fictional totalitarian society in George Orwell’s novel.

The man in the video, Brad Templeton, talks about the world of the Internet and it’s utility that has become indispensable in our lives.

He also talks about the establishing of the government to surveil the society with the help of the NSA and the other spy agencies. The essential purpose of this surveillance is to find “guilty guys” who can be dangerous.

But by doing this surveillance creates negative impacts, it touches the privacy of people who are innocent.
In my opinion, those acts aren’t fair because they affect people’s privacy and doesn’t respect human liberty. Being surveilled all the time is binding and unpalatable, we feel smothered.

I agree with Brand Templeton, surveillance is good for our security but bad for our privacy, a solution must be found to correct this.

  10. In this video Brad Templeton talks about how society has evolved . I definitely think that Brad Templeton is right , because there isn’t just internet in life. Internet can be dangerous if we spend a lot of time on it and gives a lot of personal information. If you manage your profile and your different accounts, it won’t be a problem . We must enjoy life and forget the internet .

  11. In my view, I totally agree with this man because the “Internet” could be very dangerous that’s why you shouldn’t put your private information on there, we all need privacy. With that video, I realised that the internet can’t just be used for entertainment ,but it could be a very dangerous thing for poeple…
It’s really scary because we put loads of information on social networks ! We could be hacked that’s why we have to put fake information….. haha

  12. Well, I generally agree with my classmates. To say that it’s pretty scary what Brad Templeton said is an understatement. We do not have the entire control of our “web lives” because people can go on the internet and know about our entire Life just by typing a name on their keyboard and that has real repercussions in our lives. So is the possibility of having the governments spy on us!!

  13. I’ve always heard about spying on the internet but I’ve always thought that only famous were spied on.
After watching this video, I think that the internet can become very scary. There is no doubt that spending a lot of time on the internet can become dangerous, but it has become a way of communicating and it’s now a “vital” way to express ourselves. Even if now I know all these things, I won’t change my habits. Even if I know someone is spying on me, I won’t change my way of using the internet. The thing that might change is the amount of time I’m connected to the internet. After all I’m not doing bad things and I’m not guilty so I don’t have to worry!

  14. This video is so interesting .It shows us how the Internet can be dangerous… the government uses it to spy on people .

They can actually track your phone calls and also hear what you say and know what you talk about!!

I have heard before that information on social networks can be used .. Really scary.

Brad Templeton talks about how society has evolved . I have already read “1984” by George Orwell, his book is very original ( it’s not a utopia)

I completly share Mr Templeton’s point of view.

In my opinion, spying isn’t fair because it doesn’t respect people’s privacy and doesn’t respect human rights either.
Surveillance is good for our security but bad for our privacy, so we have to find the perfect balance .

  15. Well, I just watched this video and I can assert that this man, Brad Templeton, is totally right. For him, Today’s Surveillance Society is Beyond Orwellian and I can help thinking that. He talks about how internet is used by our governments to spy on us. As far as I know, some companies like Facebook are selling our private informations to intelligence agencies like the NSA, FBI etc… . In my view, this should be unacceptable.

I can understand that nowadays, the state, with all these terrorist organizations like ISIS, Al Queada, Boko Haram… who get stronger and the attacks of 11/09, want to protect us by enchancing surveillance. But at what cost? Our privacy will be destroyed. Our freedom will be destroyed. Today, even our phones can film us without our permission. If we do nothing, maybe in ten years, or twenty, the law will allow governments to put spying cameras in our house like in this book, “1984” and Brad Templeton is trying to warn us about this. I strongly believe that we must act now, or it’ll be to late.

Internet is freedom. We must limit the power of these organizations. We must say stop because we do need our freedom, our privacy.

  16. I personnaly think that the society is getting weird because when I watched that video it made me realize that life is not what I thought it was. I mean life is not that simple. That video made me realize how dangerous the internet is. Before today, I had never heard about this suveillance society and it’s kind of scary. I mean people put information on integral, facebook or even twitter without knowing that they are controlled by society which is really intimidating .I never knew that the NSA or spy agencies controlled every single thing that people do in their lives, there is no privacy anymore!

Brad Templeton is right , surveillance is good for our security but bad for our privacy.

  17. I agree with Brad Templeton, I think that people who are spying on us through the internet and our computers don’t have the right to do that. Because that touches our privacy in our life and that’s very scary. We all have the right to live in a society where we can have our freedom to use the Internet without being afraid that someone is spying on us. So we must find a solution to this big problem.

  18. I watched the video and to my mind I totally agree with Brad Templeton. I think that he is absolutely right and he has good ideas. For example I like when he said that we were all a part of a surveillance apparatus. The government spies on us, but in my view, I don’t think that our information is associated with our name but I think just a letter or a number that represents us. Although, they do not respect the privacy of everyone, this is life and regrettably we can’t do whatever we want. So if you don’t want to have any problems, the best thing is to deactivate your wifi on your smartphone and live your life in a quiet fashion. 😉

  19. I actually watched the video called “Brad Templeton: Today’s Surveillance Society is Beyond Orwellian”. I totally agree with him in the fact that we are really living in a world without privacy , which is a concept that everyone needs in his life . This is dangerous as we can be tracked down from anywhere .
The general subject of these images are surveillance , I can say that it’s awful .
I do have a facebook account , and there are so many things we use on the internet that take away from your own privacy . Just to be aware, they said they found many ways to keep your information private and safe : those are all lies .

Everything is in danger once you make them appear on the internet.

Our freedom will be destroyed. in ten years or twenty, the law will allow governments to spy cameras in our home as in the book “1984”. I think that the internet can be very scary. There is no doubt that spend a lot of time on the Internet can become dangerous it is her that we must change our lifestyle by spending less time on internet.Brad also speaks of the establishment Government to monitor the company with the help of the NSA and other intelligence agencies. The main purpose of this monitoring is to find “the guilty guy” that can be dangerous.
Unity makes strength and it is now time to act

  22. I saw the video called “today’s surveillance society is beyond Orwellian” and I totally agree with Brad Templeton.

From the beginning, I was thinking that the internet is freedom and we can do all that we want like write our opinion about some things, talk without any censorship and not be scared about who could read our discussions with our friends.

But after seeing this video, I found out that the gouvernement is spying on us, our social networks and our phones. Then, to explain their actions, they said that they were spying on us to find terrorists and bad guys. But we know know that our privacy is destroyed and I think that our society must have their secrets, this is what George Orwell wrote about.

Finally, I believe that we have to take caution and not put all our life in the internet and social networks.

  23. This video made me realize that everything right now is being controlled. If this man is right, we’re totally spied on by many spies and companies… Even the police and the NASA know our lives. The government can read all your messages or they can hear you when you call. The police CAN sneak into your privacy life , it CAN be dangerous. I know that it’s for our security and to catch guilty and bad people ( terorism , drugs…) but your private life is important to stay a secret.

Now we know that the internet is very dangerous.

The internet is used by our governments to spy on us ! It may be good for us if they do that for surveillance and for our security but it touches our privacy!

I think that if we don’t do bad things ,we don’t have to be scared.
The conclusion is that we have to be careful with the internet and to not put our private life on it !

I totally agree with Brad Templeton! All day long, we are using our cell phones, computers and all this amazing apps, but we forget that every message we send, and every picture we share is stocked in the database of the intelligence agencies ( FBI, CIA ). It’s a violation of privacy!
    Nobody asked for our consent!
    For our security they say?
    In return of our freedom?

    NO THANKS.

But the truth is that the governments don’t care of our opinion!
America is supposed to be the land of democracy, but the president Obama felt comfurtable spying on Germany!
We are the victims of this system! We are more afraid of our own goviernments than the terrorist organizations!

  26. Well internet spying exists and everyone knows that, but I’m not really scared because I’m not doing anything wrong. If I were doing something wrong, I certainly wouldn’t talk about it on the internet. Actually governments are only spying on criminals on the web, it makes me feel more secure. A lot of terrorist were arrested thanks to the web. I don’t think that people who are spying have time to waste with the life of random citizens. Don’t you think that we shouldn’t put our private life on the internet ? I wouldn’t send my personal things by phone or facebook or whatever I prefer telling things face to face.

  28. When I watched the video “An Orwellian Society”, it opened my eyes to the dangers of the internet.

Internet is a great tool but it can be dangerous if you’re not careful.
We are perhaps spied unknowingly by malicious people and our personal information may be used against us.

I think this the normal price to pay for our freedom. Communication through internet is rather recent and reaching the right balance between complete personnal freedom and the security of our society will take some times.

Fortunately we have whistleblower like Edwar Snowden and Governements will have to change their habits, taking in consideration the population desire for a society that is afraid of a “Big Brother watching you” like in George Orwel anticipation book : 1984.

We are in 2014 and fortunately this world doesn’t exist and I am confident for our future.
