  1. It’s necessary for artits to criticize society because they give another point of view and they make us think about what’s wrong in society and what’s doesn’t work in it.
The role of the artist is to make all people think and make people wake up.
To my mind , the street artist is a positive thing for citizens and it’s a negative thing for the government and all the biggest industries

  2. It’s a very interesting documentary and I definitely think that Banksy is a fantastic artist . He brings much to street art. In his drawings we can see that he sends a message to all people who see the image , he can also indicate his point of view . I suppose that it’s a good idea because he beautified the city and makes people reflect on different issues.

  3. Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop is a film that tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a french immigrant in Los Angeles . He is obsessed with street art , he carries a camera everywhere he goes, permanently filming his surroundings. He discovered that his cousin is an internationally known artist .

Guetta heard about Banksy , a secretive artist , but he failed to find him. But when Banksy found himself stuck in LA , Guetta succeeded at being his guide . They became friends as he provided Banksy some relief for his anonymity.

I think it is necessary for artists to criticize society , because it firstly gives uq a funny way to see the different aspects and attitudes of our society nowadays , so that people in general can find their way to correct themselves. Street art is modern art where the artist can be considered a guide , as they represent people and their real behavior . So to my mind , it is a positive point although the act is illegal .

  4. In our society, many things can’t be said because of censorship that the government exerts on us. The artists are here to get over this censorship and say what they think. They use many means to send the message they want to put out there.

This video shows us the life of a famous and an unknown artist at the same time who is named Banksy.

This artist is famous in Great Britain and especially in London by the many paintings on the walls of this city. He always stays hidden not to have problems with the government. His painting is famous by the messages which make us think. Banksy has a team, a lot of fans and “sponsors” moreover the fact that he is unknown. He paints at night to not be stopped by the police.

In my opinion, It’s necessary for artists to criticize society because it makes us reflect on our vices and expose all that is hidden and what we can’t talk about. They have the role of the mediators of society, the people who talk for us without fear. Street painting is one of the means of expression that the artists use to criticize societies, political and economical problems. They paint an image which has meaning and which expresses an idea to that is shown to the people who walk on the street and at the same time to make them think about the meaning of the message.
I conclude that is a positive thing which must be continued.

  5. Last time in class, we saw “Exit Through the Gift Shop: A Banksy Film” which is a film by street artist, Banksy, that tells the story of Thierry Guetta.

Actually, Thierry Guetta is a French immigrant living in Los Angeles who’s working in his clothing shop. Besides, this man is constantly filming his daily routine ( even in toilets ).
His obsession with street art started on a holiday in France, where he met his cousin Space Invader, an internationally known street artist. He goes with Invader and his friends on their nocturnal adventures to learn more about this kind of art. Nevertheless, he continues documenting their illegal activities. Thierry finds this very interesting and fascinating.

A few months later, Invader decides to visit his cousin in LA, and arranges a meeting with Shepard Fairey, a street artist who created the OBEY sticker campaign. Thierry continues filming Fairey’s activities even after Invader has returned home to France. Thierry hopes to make a complete documentary about street art filming other artists at work.

However,Thierry continues to hear more about Banksy and wants to meet him so badly. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. He tried to contact him but failed, until one special day. Banksy was stuck in LA without a guide, Banksy contacted Fairey, who called Thierry. Guetta became Banksy’s guide in LA and after, he follows him back to England, winning the privilege to film him. Banksy refuses to be shown on screen unless he is blacked out . Back to LA, Guetta becomes bored, and finally ends up producing his own stickers and putting them up in the city.

Why do you think it is necessary for artists to criticize society? What role do they play? Is it positive or negative?

I think it’s important for people to show their point of view ( to get out their fear for example ). Therefore, artists are criticizing the society. Everyone is concerned by the way we should live here. Each of us share our thoughts with different means, thus the artists paint to leave messages. Personally, I think it’s necessary for them to criticize the society because it can allow people to change and to think differently. The society where we live needs a lot of change and we can not constantly bury our heads in the sand and act like everything is OK. I am of the opinion that it’s positive for the society and for the person who tries to send a message to society. It can change the world and also the feelings of the artist ; They will be more confident and proud because they tried to save the world.

  6. Hi! I have watched the video about Banksy and in my pojnt of view, he is a really great artist because he make’s people think about a lot of diferent subjects just with 1 image! His work is very important in today’s society because everybody can see this art on the street and everybody can understand it because the images communicate with no words which is international! I think it’s positive because, people do not pay attention to many very important subjects and Banksy makes them aware of them. It must not be forgotten that it’s thanks to some images or some little texts with images that we started the French Revolution or a world war!

  7. In my opinion society is often unequal, full of injustice and flaws. I think that most of these artists see how hard it is for people to grow in this kind of society and choose to get involved in what they do on the street, to leave a message and awaken people on the biggest problems of our societies. The message is always indirect but still very comprehensive because they make sure it can be understood by all types of people, young & old people. But most importantly, they play a positive role nowadays because they help us open our eyes on some things we couldn’t or even didn’t notice before like homeless people dying at night during winter or an unsufficient need of nutrition for poor people.

Banksy is a graffiti artist, he draws different subjects of life on the street . He takes risks to do this and he is very gifted, he expresses his feelings through his paintings.

In my opinion, it’s not necessary for artists to critcize society but street artists are kind of rebels and their main subjects will be critical of society. I think it’s positive because this allows them to express themselves in front of a a lot of people. But their are negative things also because this is not allowed by law and they take risks everyday to paint.

  10. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation. Guarding his anonymity to escape from police and reporters, Banksy made a wonderful movie about his art. “Exit Through the Gift Shop” that tells the story of a funny french emigrant, presented like the cousin of the street artist Space Invader, who became an amateur documentary filmmaker passionate about street art. Over time, his passion for street art and especially his obsession for Banksy grew. And finally, they met.

In my opinion I think that it’s necessary for artists to criticize society because if they don’t, nobody will. These men send us messages thanks to their graffiti and paintings. They denounce what’s wrong in our society. An artist like Banksy is engaged. He criticizes governments and the fact that our society is consumerist. He shows us that the true criminal isn’t the guy in the street who is painting a wall. The true criminal is the man sitting in his office. The role of all these street artists is to warn us, citizens. Therefore, street art is a good thing.

    2) They make people think , reflect , their role is to give a message through their art work .

3 ) It is positive because they pass on a message to change things for the better

  12. Artists play a very important role in our society, indeed through their work they transmit a message and share their point of view.

They allow people to see things differently with a more honest and authentic side. It makes also the society think about the word around us.

To my mind , it is necessary for artists to criticize society because it allows us to notice some issues that our word is suffering of and that the government try to hide from us .

I guess that using art for denouncing certain things which have outraged artists is very convenient because art is something that everybody appreciates and every single person can make her own interpretation.

Therefore artists play a positive role in the society since it allows us to open our eyes on certain things and see them differently.

The contemporary artist also allows everyone to travel outside his daily routine, and make us ask questions before we claim that we know the answer.

For me artists are people who challenge the boundaries of rules, society and imagination yet also keep us in touch with the past.

Thus , artists have that unique ability to engage individuals in a very deep and personal way. Art can help us understand our humanity and the historical conditions we live in, but importantly draw us into thinking whether our reality needs to be changed.

Art, can be used as a medium of confronting personal, social or political issues through criticism of the world as it is and a vision of the world as it might be.

  18. Now, in the twenty first century, we are living in a society which is full of media. We can have any information we want when we want and where we want. But there is one problem which persists: are these media showing us the exact truth? And, if they are telling the truth, are they showing us everything? This is where the engaged artists play a big role, they are denouncing what other persons are hiding. Having artists who are criticizing our society is clearly necessary especially nowadays. These artists are playing a big role in making people aware about the problems of the society. Sometimes, it can be negative and it can set off bad things such as hate, it can cause terrorism as we can see recently. We all heard about the terrorist attack against the magazine “Charlie Hebdo” in Paris. This magazine drew some caricatures to criticize Islamism problems. It ended in a terrorist attack which made 10 deaths. Artists are necessary and very important to our society, but we should not deny that even art has limits that we should not cross.

    • Sorry, I forgot to talk about Banksy’s exit through the gift shop:
So this film is about a French man, living in Los Angeles and who loves filming. One year, he went to Paris and started filming his cousin who is a street artist. He loved that and he started going out with a lot of street artiste, he was filming them, helping them and doing the entire thing they do.
But Thierry’s dream was to find and to film Banksy, the most famous street artist in earth. One day Banksy came to L.A and needed a guide. This is when Guetta met Banksy. He started filming him and going out with him where ever he went. After coming back to L.A Thierry decided to make his own stickers and to stick them all around the city

  19. Criticizing society is important in its development because positive criticism points out the vices of any society and it is a huge step in the changement and making it better. Therefore, it’s very important for artists to be engaged in their arts and use it to denunciate abuses of politicians, the inequalities in a population or more generally give their opinion on any controverted social trends.
It is the artist’s role to speak for the people and express their demands or protests because unlike politicians or journalists who have their own interest in corrupting news, an artist is just another citizen; he has no personal interest in saying what he says except to express his opinion.
Generally, artists play a positive role in society because art is the best way to open people’s eyes on a social phenomenon, make them aware of what is happening by using metaphors that will affect them better than saying it directly like a journal article. If we take the example of Banksy, a New York street artist, his paintings on walls are powerful and find their way through the mind of every passer-by.
On the other hand, artists can say whatever they want which is the principle of freedom of speech but this can constitute a problem. Indeed, even if they denunciate social problems and try to solve them, they’re just giving a personal opinion even if they are right or not. They remain subjective.

This inevitably leads him to make friends with some famous American graffiti artists such as Sheppard Fairey and Space Invader. However he is unable to meet the most reputed one, a certain Banksy whose graffiti is well-known all over the world. Banksy is a very talented artist who prefers to keep his anonymity so as not to be arrested by the police, but Thierry succeeds in interviewing him. As Thierry shows great concern in graffiti, Banksy initiates him into the art and soon Thierry becomes a graffiti artist himself under the pseudonym of Brainwash. Thierry wants to make a documentary about graffiti art and artist and finds himself with a role in his documentary.

This is an uncomfomism art and street artists use the public spaces as a live museum sometimes playing with the law for displaying their masterpieces Street art is an “underground media”. Banksy’s works represents freedom of expression and the society needs this expression as Bansky and the other street artists defend somehow the core value of our humanity. The news today, show how fragil is this freedom. Catoonists are also artists and their works protect all of us from the extremists and their fashist vision.

And for this, artists use different manners to send us their message. Among these artists, there is Banksy a graffiti artist that use a pseudonym to not be know by the police. He made a film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” where he shows the mural graffiti and the paintings in the street. These artists play an important role because they open our eyes on a society without privacy and they allow us to seea different kind of art, here, the “street art” which is very beautiful, I saw some mural graffitis in Amsterdam, it was incredible. Personnaly, I think that the street art is positive because we can see the bad things of the world, in this case, the “Big Brother Is Watching You” actual society.

It allows you to communicate to a big range of people, because a visual representation is more attractive, fortheremore everybody can see the same thing (elderly, children, illiterate..) Everybody who’s lucky to see it. But only the emotion and felt that emerge from this representation is different in each of us. For me, art is a way for the artist to express himself, to criticize, and to be spokesman of a large number of people with great ideas. Banksy’s representations reflect a part of society. He gives some hope, but before any, this thirst which has society, its need for faith and for the truth. Because not everything is beautiful in our world, he isn’t representing just what is positive, but also what is negative. He gives a mirror to the society and he just said :”look at that…, it’s you”!

  31. The movie we watched in class is called « Exit Through The Gift Shop » : it was directed by Banksy, a world famous street artist.
Thierry Guetta, a French man living in Los Angeles, is the cousin of a street artist, known as Invader, because of the little mosaics of space invaders he leaves on Paris’ walls. Guetta is passionate about amateur documentary filming, especially when it comes to filming street artists during their work. He tells them he is making a documentary, which he will never actually edit. He got the chance to film a lot of those artists like Monsieur André, Zevs or Fairey during their creating process, and even help them sometimes. While he get’s to know better the world of street art, he hears about Banksy, a famous British artist known to be very secret. He attempts to contact him in order to add a video of him to his collection, but he fails. Guetta finally meets Banksy; the artist comes to Los Angeles, to practice his art, but he needs a guide in the city of stars. Banksy finally accepts to be filmed, as long as his face is blacked out. Later, Banksy manages to convince Guetta to edit his street art movie; he thinks documenting street art is a good idea, since it has a short life. When Guetta finally edits the movie, Banksy comes to the conclusion he’s a bad filmmaker; the 90 minutes movie is just made of cut and random short videos. But, Banksy thinks the footage itself is good, and decides to make a movie himself. He then convinces Guetta to become a street artist, under the pseudonym of « Mr. BrainWash », which becomes world-known.

Why do you think it is necessary for artists to criticize society? What role do they play? Is it positive or negative?

First of all, I think it is necessary for society to be criticized.
Since art is usually not made of caracters or words, but made of symbols, it a visual conception to a message, that everyone can comprehend, I assume it is the perfect way to criticize something and having the message understood by everyone. Art is a language, a common way of communication every single person is able to figure out.
Therefore, it is necessary for artists to criticize society through their art, because this way they can influence its evolution ; depending on how their work is interpreted, they can affect people’s way of thinking.

Artists used to play the role media have today; they used to be the way people could know what was happening is the society.
Let’s take as an example the totalitarian regimes during World War II ; they used art to make people accept their ideas, shaping their minds. They litterally managed to brainwash their nations through art. Governments, to manipulate people, used Art.
In today’s society, this role is played by media, which have a greater capacity to influence the crowds.
But, there has also always been engaged artists, who were involved in causes they defended with all their might, investing themselves body and soul.

Today, most of the artists are engaged in a cause; they want to make people see the world differently, with more sincerity, they want to show the truth of the world we’re living in. That’s why I agree with the fact that artists play a big role today’s; they are the voice of the people, they have to express the opinions through their art.
I personally think their role can be considered whether positive or negative; it depends on what causes or opinions they defend, but, yet it is a very important role.
